Reliance With a partnership with Luxembourg-based firm SES, Jio has announced its debut into satellite-based broadband communication.

According to the company, the cooperation will allow Jio to provide next-generation affordable and scalable internet services in India using satellite technology. Jio Platforms Ltd and SES will form a joint venture, with Jio Platforms Ltd owning 51% and SES owning 49%, respectively.

"The joint venture will use multi-orbit space networks, which are a combination of geostationary (GEO) and medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellations capable of delivering multi-gigabit links and capacity to enterprises, mobile backhaul, and retail customers across the length and breadth of India and neighbouring regions," according to a statement from the two companies.

"With the exception of select international aviation and maritime customers who may be supplied by SES, the joint venture will be the vehicle for providing SES satellite data and communication services in India." SES will provide up to 100 Gbps of bandwidth, and Jio's leading position and sales reach in India will be used to capitalise on this market opportunity. The joint venture would create substantial gateway infrastructure in India as part of its investment strategy to supply services throughout the country. Jio, as the joint venture's anchor customer, has signed a multi-year capacity purchase agreement based on specified milestones, as well as gateways and equipment purchases, with a total contract value of around $100 million," they added.
