Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti is celebrated on October 2 every year. His birthday coincides with that of Mahatma Gandhi. Most people know only about Gandhi Jayanti on this day. However, it is fit to mention that both the two great heroes born on this day dedicated their lives to the larger cause of the nation. The year 2022 will celebrate the 115th birth anniversary of the national heroes.
Lal Bahadur Shastri: 118 Birth Anniversary: Born in an ordinary middle class family on October 2, 1904 at Mughal Surai in Uttar Pradhesh, Lal Bahadur Shastri spent his childhood in poverty and penury, but he was a man with humanism honesty and straightforwardness. After education at Kasha Vidhyapeeth he devoted himself for social life and joined the Servants of People Society founded by Lala Lajpat Rai.
Lal Bahadur Dhastri, who succeeded Jawaharlal Nehru as the prime minister of India, managed the affairs of the nation successfully. He was noted as a man of peace. He had participated in the freedom struggle and served in Nehru cabinet.
He faced Pakistan boldly when it invaded India in September 1965. Though he participated successfully in the indo Pak agreement signed in Tashkent (USSR) he passed away there itself on January 11, 1966. Only a few hours had elapsed after he signed the agreement.
That was the time when the freedom movement was at its peak. Shastri plunged into the freedom struggle. After India won independence, his first entry was into UP political arena. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was much impressed with Shastri’s ability and took him the Centre-stage of Indian politics. He was made the general secretary of the congress because of his organizational abilities.
Later, Lal Bahadur Shastri became the union minster for Railways. But he soon resigned from this post, owing to moral responsibility for a major railway accident as the minister in charge of railway. Thus he set a rare example and precedent in political administration.
When Jawaharlal Nehru died in the year 1964, he was elected as the third Prime Minister of India. His life was a saga of high moral conduct, simplicity of behavior, sacrifice, politeness, and firm determination.
Lal Bahadur Shastri was posthumously conferred the “Bharat Ratna”, the highest civilian award in recognition of his services to the nation. A memorial has been set up at Vijay Ghat, Delhi, which shall always remind us of his greatness.
Shastri impressed one and all by his statesmanship, homey and administrative ability. He has left an indelible mark on the political scene of this country.
