Ramesh Bhatkar was born in 1949. His father was Snehal (Vasudeo) Bhatkar, a music director, composer, and singer.
Ramesh Bhatkar had a strong artistic background, but he was also a champion swimmer who competed for his college's aquatic team in his early college years. Chandoba Chandoba Bhaglaas ka, AshtaVinayak , Duniya kari Salam, Maaherchi Manasa, Aapli Maanasa, and Maherchi Sadi were Bhatkar's subsequent mainstream film debuts. He also had little roles in movies like Savat majhi Ladki and Lek Chalali Sasarla as a groom and bride.

Most of his almost 90 films are in Marathi, although a few are in Hindi. He last appeared in the movie The Accidental Prime Minister as a figure largely modelled on the former chief minister of Maharashtra, Prithviraj Chavhan.

Very popular detective series like Hello Inspector  and Damini (Marathi) on DoorDarshan, Commander on Zee TV, Khoj  on DD National, and Teesra Dola on DD2 all contributed to Ramesh's successful television career and made him a well-known TV personality.

He also made cameos in the films Yugandhara, Vikram Aur Betaal, and Haddapaar. In his early years, he also made an appearance in the suspense/thriller short film Sirf Chaar din by B. P. Singh.
