Mukesh Chand Mathur, popularly known as Mukesh, was a legendary singer in the Indian film industry. Born on July 22, 1923, in Delhi, Mukesh belonged to a Kayastha Hindu family and was the sixth of ten siblings. Although he didn't initially aspire to become a singer, music was an integral part of his life. His elder sister had a keen interest in singing, and Mukesh would often secretly watch her learn from a guru. He would also hum film songs, showcasing his innate talent.

Mukesh's journey in the film industry began when his sister's husband, Motilal, a renowned filmmaker and actor, discovered his singing talent at a family wedding. Motilal took Mukesh to Mumbai, where he started his career as an actor. However, his early films failed to impress audiences. Motilal then encouraged Mukesh to focus on singing, and his first superhit song, "Dil Jalata Hai To Jalane De," was born in the 1945 film "Pehli Nazar."

Mukesh's unique voice and style eventually made him the go-to playback singer for Raj Kapoor's films. He sang some of Kapoor's most iconic songs, including "Sab Kuch Sikhna Hain," "Aawara Hoon," "Duniya Banane Wale," "Dam Dam Diga Diga," "Kisi Ki Muskurahaton Pe," and "Bol Radha Bol Sangam." Mukesh's association with Raj Kapoor spanned over two decades, with his last song for the actor being "Ek Din Bik Jaayega Maati Ke Mol" from the 1975 film "Dharam Karam."

Mukesh's life was marked by his dedication to music and his passion for singing. He worked tirelessly to hone his craft, and his efforts paid off when he became one of the most sought-after playback singers in the industry. His legacy continues to inspire generations of singers and music lovers alike.

Tragically, Mukesh's life was cut short when he passed away on August 27, 1976, at the age of 53, due to a heart attack. He was in the United States for a concert when he fell ill and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Mukesh left behind a treasure trove of iconic songs, which continue to be celebrated and cherished by fans worldwide.

Today, on Mukesh's birth anniversary, we remember the legendary singer and his immense contribution to Indian cinema. His music remains an integral part of our cultural heritage, and his legacy continues to inspire new talent in the industry.
