Legendary actor Shashi Kapoor would have turned 85 today. Born on March 18, 1938, Shashi  Kapoor was one of the most loved actors of the yester-year and was known for his charming smile and impeccable acting skills.

Over his life span, he acted in more than 120 Hindi films, including 60 films as the solo lead actor, 55 multi-starrers, 22 films as the supporting actor and made special appearances in 7 films. He was also one of the first actors of India to go international with films like The Householder and Shakespeare-Wallah.

An actor who personified charm and enticed the audience with his varied performances on the silver screen, Shashi Kapoor was an actor par excellence. The Indian film industry lost one of its gems at the age of 79 in 2017 but he is a personality whose filmography will keep him alive in our memories, forever.

Shashi Kapoor charmed his audience with films like Deewaar, Kabhie Kabhie, Namak Halal, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Sharmelee and Shaan to name a few. He started off his career as a child artist. He acted in plays, directed and produced by his father Prithviraj Kapoor and later on, made a debut as a child actor in the late 1940s under the name of Shashiraj. His best-known performances as a child actor were in Aag (1948) and Awaara (1951), where he played the younger version of the characters played by his older brother Raj Kapoor.

His popularity was not just limited to Bollywood, he was a recognised face in Hollywood as well doing films like Shakespeare Wallah, Bombay Talkie and Gulliver's Travels among others. In 2011, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India for his contributions to Art-Cinema. In 2015, he was awarded the 2014 Dadasaheb Phalke Award, making him the third member of his family to receive the highest award in Indian Cinema after Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor. The actor passed away on 4 December 2017 due to prolonged liver cirrhosis. At the 90th Academy Awards, Shashi Kapoor was remembered in the 'In Memoriam' segment.
