WASHINGTON:  Republican primary Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., a onetime House GOP leader and a daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, was ousted in a Republican primary Tuesday night, NBC News projects.

According to the DPA news agency, Harriet Hageman, a Trump-backed attorney who has pushed to thwart federal regulations in Wyoming, defeated the three-term representative.

On Tuesday night, Cheney announced that she had conceded to Hageman, who was leading in the early returns by more than 25 percentage points, while surrounded by family and supporters close to Jackson, Wyoming.

She mentioned that she had easily won the previous election for her congressional seat and admitted that this primary would have followed suit if she hadn't publicly resisted Trump's attempts to erode trust in the US electoral process.
The path was open, and I could have done it again with ease, Cheney added.

"However, doing so would have compelled me to support President Trump's fabrication regarding the 2020 election. It would have compelled me to support his continued efforts to undermine our republic's founding principles and our democratic system. I could not and would not go down that road." The former president and his associates gave the contest significant attention, and many of them contributed to, supported, or worked on Hageman's campaign.
