Report: Cyclone Tauktae to hit Gujarat on May 18

PM Narendra Modi took a high level meeting on Friday. The cyclone Tauktae is soon going to hit India amid this PM Modi calls a meeting to review the preparedness of States and Central Ministries/Agencies.

The ones who are responsible for the relief work should be well concerned about how to deal with the situation arising out of Cyclone 'Tauktae'. India Meteorological Department expects cyclone to touch Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Naliya. Tauktae can touch around 18th May afternoon or maybe evening with the wind speed ranging upto 175 kmph. Presumably, heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of Gujarat, including Junagadh & Gir Somnath, Saurashtra Kutch & Diu namely Gir Somnath, Diu, Junagadh, Porbandar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Amreli, Rajkot, Jamnagar. The weather department also warned of storm surge of about 2-3 meters above astronomical tide to inundate coastal areas of Morbi, Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka & Jamnagar districts and 1-2 meters along Porbandar, Junagarh, Diu, Gir Somnath, Amreli, Bhavnagar and 0.5 to 1m over the remaining coastal districts of Gujarat.

Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Army have deployed ships and helicopters for relief, search and rescue operation are currently at standby. Seven ships with humanitarian assistance and disaster relief units are on standby along the western coast. Surveillance aircraft and helicopters gave also reported at locations. While, a number of ministries, including those of power, telecom, health and family welfare, and port, shipping and waterways, have also taken measures to deal with the evolving situation. NDRF is assisting the state agencies for evacuating people from the vulnerable locations. It is also continuously holding community awareness campaign on how to deal with the cyclonic situation.

PM Modi, in the meantime, also directed officials to ensure COVID management in their states.
