New Delhi: Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology has summoned representatives of Facebook and Google India for a meeting on June 29. The meeting will hear the views of the two companies on protecting citizens' rights and preventing misuse of social online news media platforms.
An official agenda was shared among the members of the Shashi Tharoor-led committee which sought the opinion of representatives of Facebook India and Google India on the subject of protection of citizens' rights and prevention of social abuse. Earlier, Facebook representatives had informed the parliamentary committee that their company's policies do not allow officials to appear in person because of the Corona virus protocol. But committee chairman Shashi Tharoor told Facebook that its officials will have to appear physically as parliament does not allow secretariat virtual meetings.
According to media reports, the committee will also summon representatives of YouTube and other social media platforms to discuss the same issues in the coming days. Let's say that earlier this month representatives from microblogging site Twitter appeared before the committee. The meeting was held over an ongoing tussle with the US-based social media company's government over a number of issues. The meeting also discussed the rights of citizens in the digital space and the misuse of social media platforms as well as the safety of women.
