New Delhi: Mansukh Mandaviya, the minister of health, said on Wednesday that research and innovation are essential for the pharmaceutical industry to grow steadily. The focus must switch from the self-sustenance model to the profit model, said the minister, who spoke at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research's (NIPERs) first governing council meeting. This can be done by building infrastructure, connecting with industry, and expanding the research base.
The experience of human resources should be used coupled with the adoption of best practices from other institutions. Only then will we be able to establish the National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs) as a hub for top-notch research and lay the groundwork for national pharmaceutical innovation, he said. The minister reaffirmed in a tweet the government's commitment to bolstering the NIPER brand and the comprehensive research ecosystem in the pharmaceutical industry.
In order to further emphasize the required actions that may be taken, he stated that the government has already taken a number of initiatives, such as the new programme known as "pharma innovation," which is being carried out through Centers of Excellence (CoEs). "We'll also encourage Industry to spend money on R&D in certain high-priority fields, like health technologies and medical equipment. Via our NIPERs, we must develop competitive, marketable solutions.
The minister continued by saying that strong cooperation and consultations are required in order to achieve this, not only with NIPERs but also with other pertinent research organisations like the Department of Biotechnology, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, ICMR, DRDO, etc. "In this context, relationships between researchers and peers, both formally and informally, are necessary." When discussing building institutional capacities, Mandaviya advised the attendees to adjust to the rapidly changing technological landscape and concentrate on ensuring that the nation is self-sufficient in the most important technologies of the future.
The world's best practises must be adapted to the demands of the local community before being embraced and put into action. He advised enlarging the research repository for improved visibility to all stakeholders in order to support R&D activities and increase exposure for commercialization.
This will further improve researcher cooperation and combine efforts to produce more translational research leading to commercially viable products. A research compendium that includes research and development in medications and pharmaceuticals being done at NIPERs was released by the union minister. It lists the results of R&D activities in the form of patents, publications, extramural projects, and projects funded by industry.
