Review of the Huawei Watch Ulitmate: A durable smartwatch

The Huawei Watch Ultimate stands out with its large circular design, resembling a traditional watch at first glance. It has a rugged and robust appearance, measuring 48.5mm × 48.5mm × 13mm, which may not appeal to everyone's taste. Surprisingly, despite its weight of 76g, it doesn't feel bulky or uncomfortable on the wrist.

Huawei has prioritized durability by using Zirconium-based Liquid metal for the watch's case. This material, which is an alloy of some of the toughest metals, including Aluminum, Steel, and Titanium, is stronger and more corrosion-resistant than those metals. The watch also features a ceramic bezel and Sapphire glass, the same material used in premium and luxury watches. Sapphire glass is highly resistant to scratches and ranks just below diamond in terms of hardness.

The Huawei Watch Ultimate comes in two color options: Expedition Black and Voyager Blue. It offers a choice between two straps, a black rubber strap, or a titanium strap for an additional cost.

Water resistance is another standout feature of the watch. It is certified for ISO 22810 and EN13319 standards, with a 10 ATM rating, allowing it to withstand water pressure at a depth of around 100 meters. This makes it suitable for activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and diving, surpassing the capabilities of many competitors.

The watch employs a combination of touch display and physical buttons for intuitive navigation. It features three simple buttons: an assist button, a rotating crown, and a function button. Swiping down from the top of the screen brings up quick settings like torch, alarm, do not disturb, etc., providing convenient access. Swiping up from the bottom reveals notifications.

Swiping left and right allows users to access important statistics, such as sleep tracking, weather information, fitness targets (e.g., step count and progress), SpO2 level, and heart rate.

The Huawei Watch Ultimate boasts a fantastic 1.5-inch LTPO AMOLED display. The screen supports a dynamic refresh rate, ranging from 1 to 60Hz, which helps preserve battery life when not actively scrolling through menus while maintaining excellent clarity and responsiveness.

The display is bright, sharp, and highly detailed, featuring a resolution of 466 x 466 pixels and a pixel density of 311 PPI. This makes it sharper than most smartwatches available, ensuring clear visibility of your fitness and health stats.

Additionally, the watch offers an always-on display option, which can be turned off to further extend battery life.

The Huawei Watch Ultimate offers a wide range of fitness and health measuring features, including ECG, heart rate tracking, blood oxygen monitoring, arterial stiffness measurement, sleep tracking, step counter, and various workout modes. These features can be manually activated through the Huawei Health app on your smartphone. Additionally, it includes useful functionalities such as find my phone, the ability to play stored music through wireless earbuds or its built-in speaker, and the option to take calls and reply to messages when connected to your smartphone.

A new feature called Expedition mode is also available on the Ultimate, which changes the watch layout to display distance, battery status, outdoor environmental conditions, and health indicators. It utilizes Dual-Band Five-System GNSS for accurate map positioning and allows you to set waypoints for tracking your journey.

The Huawei Watch Ultimate is equipped with a remarkable Li-Po 530 mAh battery that can last up to two weeks, surpassing the battery life of smartwatches from Google and Apple. It can be fully charged in just one hour and supports Qi wireless charging.

Operating System:

The watch runs on HarmonyOS 3.0, which offers a quick and responsive user experience. However, it's important to note that Huawei devices do not support Google's Wear OS. As a result, you cannot use the Google Play Store to download apps and watch faces for the Huawei Watch Ultimate. Customization options for the watch, such as watch faces and MP3 downloads, are available through the Huawei Health app, which can be downloaded for free from the Huawei website but is no longer available on the Google Play Store. Additional apps can be obtained through the app gallery within the Huawei Health app.

The Huawei Watch Ultimate comes with a premium build and is priced starting at £699. The titanium band version is priced at £749. This places it in the same price range as top-tier smartwatches like the Apple Watch Ultra (£849) and the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro (£479), as well as diving watches like the Garmin Descent Mk2 (£1,049.99).
