New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed Raghav Magunta, an accused in the Delhi liquor scam case, to surrender by June 12. The accused is out on bail. The apex court's order came on a petition filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Additional Solicitor General SV Raju appeared in the court on behalf of the ED. He urged the court to hear the petition immediately. The ED had sought cancellation of Magunta's two-week interim bail.

The Delhi High Court had granted bail to the accused for two weeks. SV Raju, appearing for the ED, said that he had earlier sought bail over his wife's illness. The trial court said that the accused has serious economic charges. In such a situation, bail cannot be granted. After this, his grandmother suddenly slipped into the bathroom and fell and he sought bail from the court to take care of her. In fact, the Delhi High Court had on Wednesday granted him interim bail for two weeks. He told the court that his grandmother had slipped and fell in the bathroom, so she had to be taken care of.

A bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Rajesh Bindal modified the high court order and reduced the bail of the accused from two weeks to June 12. The court has ordered him to surrender by June 12. The ED is probing the money laundering angle in the Delhi Excise Policy case. Raghav Magunta has been made an accused in this case. The ED has argued in the court that the excuse of bail is a new tactic to take care of the ailing grandmother. Rich people, scamsters and criminal accused are using it to find a way out of jail.

Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing for the ED, told the court that rich people were being thrown into bathrooms for temporary bail. The next day, AAP leader and former jail minister Satyendar Jain collapsed in the bathroom. He has also sought bail by saying the same. As Raghav has sought, the basis for bail is that his grandmother feels it is necessary to have him (the accused) in her care. Raju has argued that he is a scamster. They can manage hospitals. The accused can also tamper with evidence.
