Richard Roat, a character actor with more than 130 credits spanning close to 50 years, has passed away. He was known for his roles in many of the most popular TV series, including Seinfeld, Friends, Cheers, Murphy Brown, Dallas, Hawaii Five-O, and Happy Days. He was 89.

Roat passed away on August 5 in Orange County, California, his family reported. There were no further details offered. Roat, who was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on July 3, 1933, had a few small TV parts before to being chosen to play Dr Jerry Chandler in the 1962 pilot of the NBC soap opera The Doctors. During the first season of the, which aired for two decades, he was in more than 170 episodes.

After appearing as a special guest on The Fugitive in 1965, he went on to have a busy career as a character actor. Roat made remarkable television appearances in classic comedies and dramas from the 1970s, including Hawaii Five-O, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Columbo, Cannon, Kojak, The Bob Newhart Show, Police Story, Vega$, Fantasy Island, Happy Days, Charlie's Angeles, and Dallas. Roat also had supporting roles in 1970s films like Corvette Summer, American Hot Wax, and Westworld.

The Practice, Ellen, Coach, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Murphy Brown, The Nanny, Melrose Place, Blossom, Grace Under Fire, Living Single, Mad About You, Lois & Clark, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Night Court, Baywatch, Murphy's Law, Simon & Simon, L.A. Law, Matlock, ALF, St. Elsewhere, Hart to Hart, and other popular TV shows featured him as a sought-after TV character actor throughout 1980 In the 1978 television movie Almost Heaven, he also acted alongside Eva Gabor, Robert Hays, and a young Jay Leno.

Fans of Seinfeld will recall Roat as one of the medical professionals who labelled Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Elaine Benes as a "difficult patient" in the 1998 episode "The Package" from Season 8. In a 2000 Friends episode, he also made an appearance as the professor's colleague who exposes Ross (David Schwimmer) for dating a student.

In the past, he made an appearance in two episodes of The Golden Girls, playing a character who passes away while having sex with Rose in Season 1. (Betty White). Roat also appeared in several episodes of Hill Street Blues as Farnsworth from 1982 to 1985, as well as in 1986 as a publisher on Dynasty.
