Carlos Arthur Nuzman, the former President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), was sentenced to 30 years and 11 months in jail for suspected corruption, money laundering, and tax fraud. The 79-year-old Nuzman was a key figure in a plot to buy votes for Rio de Janeiro to host the 2016 Olympics, Judge Marcelo Bretas said

In the ruling, Bretas stated, "The reasons that led Carlos Nuzman to criminal actions are very reproachable." "He has demonstrated himself to be a selfish individual who, although being fully aware of the unlawful nature of his conduct, utilised his public position to commit crimes." Nuzman will stay free pending the outcome of his appeals, according to Brazilian law.

Sergio Cabral, an ex-governor of Rio de Janeiro, as well as entrepreneur Arthur Soares and Rio 2016 operations manager Leonardo Gryner, have all been found guilty.

Investigators believe Nuzman, Cabral, Soares, and Gryner conspired to pay a USD 2 million bribe to Lamine Diack, the former president of the International Association of Athletics Federations, and his son Papa Diack in exchange for votes on Olympic hosting rights.
