New Delhi: The new report shows the data of Indian male smoker which rise up to 36%,India failed to follow the anti-smoking campaign as  the country witnessed 36% increase in the last 17 years.

The study published in a Health journal recorded a data of age group of these new smoking entrants in India is between 15-29 years old and also said that the traditional bidi was replaced by expensive cigarettes.

Dr. Prabhat Jha the study author has said to the Indian government to increase the tax rate on tobacco in the new budget,2016. As the experts believes it is the only way to lower the smoking rate.

As per Times of India reports, in the year 2010, smoking caused about 1 million deaths in India with approximately 70% of those deaths occuring between the ages of 30 and 69, said a press release. The study also found the number of men smoking any type of tobacco at ages 15-69 years rose by about 29 million, or 36 %, from 79 million in 1998 to 108 million in 2015, representing an average annual increase of about 1.7 million male smokers.

Dr Jha, said th, "Cigarettes are steadily displacing traditional bidis. By 2015, there were roughly equal numbers of men ages 15-69 years smoking cigarettes or bidis: approximately 61 million Indian adult men smoked cigarettes (40 million exclusively) and 69 million smoked bidis (48 million exclusively).”
