Lucknow: Action has been initiated against Samajwadi Party (SP) workers who stopped the EVM car being sent for the practice of vote counting in Varanasi. A total of 300 accused have been booked in the case so far. All of them are accused of stone-pelting and vandalism. SP workers had also thrown stones at the car of ADG Varanasi. The incident took place on Tuesday (March 8, 2022).

Lalpur-Pandeypur police have registered a case under 16 bayonet sections including an attempt to murder, robbery, extortion, obstruction of government work. The video and photo are being examined to identify the accused. According to media reports, the commotion was created on the way from Varanasi to Paharia Mandi when two vehicles had left for training with EVMs. The vehicle was stopped by SP workers and started shouting slogans alleging that the EVMs were changed. Samajwadi Party (SP) Akhilesh Yadav and Om Prakash Rajbhar had also tweeted in the matter.

Varanasi DM Kaushal Raj Sharma had said that the EVMs were being taken for the training of staff before counting votes. A report in this regard was also sent to the Election Commission. The commission has dismissed the allegations of EVM tampering. Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra has said, "There is no question of EVM tampering. It has been in use since 2004. It is sealed in front of candidates of all parties. At present, after this whole development, the Election Commission has suspended the ADM of Varanasi.
