Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala government has banned online rummy games in the state. It was announced by the government on Saturday after which the notification was issued. It states that Rummy games played online for money have been banned under the Kerala Gaming Act. Section 14A of the Kerala Gaming Act 1960 has been amended to ban online gaming. Two weeks ago, the government informed the Kerala High Court that it would issue a notification banning online rummy games.

The court was hearing a petition against websites and apps promoting online rummy games and similar gambling activities. The court had asked the state government to act on it as many people in Kerala lost everything after being defeated in the online gambling game due to the lockdown. Many people had even gone as far as suicide.

Prior to the amendment, the state police could take legal action under the Kerala Gaming Act on rummy played in public for money. But the online rummy game was outside the purview of this law, which has now been brought under the law under the amendment. Taking advantage of the lack of legislation in the past, many online gambling apps and portals have gained much publicity and individuals in the state started using it to earn money. Now, with the new amendment, the police can take legal action against such websites upon receipt of the complaint.
