Rupee declines 22 paise against dollar to close at 76.51

The Indian rupee lost 22 paise to settle at 76.51 against the dollar on Tuesday, owing to a strong dollar in the international market and considerable outflows of foreign funds.

The rupee opened at 76.34 versus the dollar on the interbank foreign exchange market and closed at 76.51, down 22 paise from the previous level. During session, the rupee hit an intraday high of 76.25 and a low of 76.53 against the US dollar during the session.

The rupee was 10 paise down versus the dollar on Monday, closing at 76.29. The rupee has lost 38 paise versus the US dollar for the fourth consecutive day.

Meanwhile, The dollar index, which measures the strength of the greenback against a basket of six currencies, was up 0.02 percent at 100.79. Conversely, Brent crude prices lost 1.18 percent to USD 111.82 per barrel, the global benchmark.

At the stock market front,  the BSE Sensex fell 703.59 points, or 1.23 percent, to 56,463.15 points, while the broader NSE Nifty down 215.00 points, or 1.25 percent, to 16,958.65 points in the domestic equity market. According to stock exchange data, foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market on Monday, offloading shares worth Rs 6,387.45 crore.
