The Indian rupee ended the day unchanged, as gains from buoyant domestic stocks and fresh foreign inflows were offset by robust demand for the US currency in the international market.

The local unit opened down at 79.90 against the greenback on the interbank forex market and eventually finished at 79.86, a 1 paisa drop from its previous level. During the day, the local currency reached an intraday high of 79.86 and a low of 79.92 against the US dollar.

The dollar index, which measures the strength of the greenback against a basket of six currencies, was 0.20 percent higher at 107.12.

The dollar rose on Friday due to greater safe-haven appeal amid recession fears and poor European PMI data.

Meanwhile, Brent crude futures slid 0.56 percent to USD 103.28 a barrel, the global oil benchmark.

On the Indian share market front, the BSE Sensex finished 390.28 points or 0.70 percent higher at 56,072.23, while the broader NSE Nifty climbed 114.20 points or 0.69 percent to 16,719.45.

According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors continued to be net buyers in the capital market on Thursday, purchasing shares worth Rs 1,799.32 crore.
