Rupee falls 11 paise versus dollar to conclude at 76.55

On Monday, the rupee fell 11 paise to 76.55 against the US dollar, owing to lower crude oil prices and foreign fund outflows.The rupee opened at 76.63 versus the dollar on the interbank foreign exchange market. During the session, it regained some lost ground but remained in negative territory as investors flocked to safe-haven assets.  The local currency ended the day at 76.55 per dollar, down 11 paise from the previous closing.

In February, wholesale price-based inflation increased to 13.11 percent, owing to higher crude oil and non-food prices, notwithstanding lower food prices. WPI inflation surged in February after two months of slight easing and remained in double digits for the 11th month in a row, commencing in April 2021. The dollar index, which measures the strength of the greenback against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.39 percent at 98.79. Brent crude futures fell 3.28 percent to $108.97 a barrel, the global benchmark.

The Sensex closed the day 935.72 points higher, or 1.68 percent, at 56,486.02, while the wider NSE Nifty climbed 240.85 points, or 1.45 percent, to 16,871.30.  According to exchange statistics, foreign institutional investors maintained their selling binge in Indian markets on Friday, offloading shares worth Rs.2,263.90 crore on a net basis.
