Indian rupee began the fiscal year 2022-23 on a positive note, rising 19 paise to 75.55 against the US dollar on Monday, helped by a strong trend in domestic markets.

The local currency opened at 75.77 against the dollar on the interbank Forex market, with an intraday high of 75.42 and a low of 75.79. It finally closed at 75.55, an increase of 19 paise over the previous close.  Due to a stronger dollar and rising crude oil prices, the local unit ended the fiscal year 2021-22 with overall losses of 3.61 percent or 264 paise against the US dollar.

The Forex market was closed last Friday because banks were shutting their accounts for the year. The dollar index, which measures the strength of the greenback against a basket of six currencies, increased 0.12 percent to 98.75.  The global oil benchmark, Brent crude futures, fell 1.07 percent to USD 103.27 per barrel.

The BSE Sensex rose 1,335.05 points, or 2.25 percent, to 60,611.74, while the broader NSE Nifty rose 382.95 points, or 2.17 percent, to 18,053.40. According to stock exchange data, foreign institutional investors remained net purchasers in the capital market on Friday, purchasing shares worth Rs 1,909.78 crore.
