Moscow: As soon as Britain approves Pfizer-BioNTech's coronavirus vaccine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued an order to vaccinate Sputnik V vaccine "extensively" in the country. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu previously said that the army had launched a mass coronavirus vaccination campaign aimed at vaccinating 400,000 soldiers. The Ministry of Defense announced that 2,500 soldiers had already been vaccinated.

The Russian president said, "I will ask you to organize the work so that by the end of next week we will start this mass vaccination." Putin said teachers and health workers would be the first to receive the vaccine. Russian officials said that according to preliminary data, the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine was 95% effective. It was the world's first coronavirus vaccine, launched by Putin in August.

The Ministry of Defense was involved in the early stages of development of Sputnik V, which is named after the Soviet-era satellite. In Russia, 25,487 new Coronavirus infection cases have been reported in the past week, bringing the total number of infected people to over 2,187,990. The country has been hit by another wave of the virus.
