MOSCOW: Russia declared a temporary ceasefire in the two southern Ukrainian cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha on Saturday to allow residents to be evacuated via humanitarian corridors, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

According to sources, the truce began around 10 a.m. (approximately 1.30 p.m. IST). The humanitarian corridors would allow civilians to leave the two cities, as agreed by the Ukrainian side, the Ministry said, without specifying how long the ceasefire will last.

On Thursday, Russian and Ukrainian negotiators agreed to construct humanitarian corridors for civilian evacuation and a temporary stop of hostilities along the evacuation routes during their second round of peace negotiations.

According to the BBC, Pavlo Kirilenko, the leader of the Donetsk region's military administration, confirmed the temporary ceasefire and stated that his administration is currently working on the arrangements of the evacuation.

The truce will continue from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to the Mariupol City Council, and evacuations will begin at 11 a.m. The corridor will run from Mariupol to Zaporizhzhia, a city in western Ukraine, according to the statement. The City Council further stated that buses will depart from three places throughout the city, and that private vehicles will be permitted to travel along the authorised route.
