Russia pledges retaliation against latest US sanctions

MOSCOW: The Russian Foreign Ministry has stated that Moscow will respond to Washington's latest package of sanctions, but that the retaliation will not be symmetrical.

"We will announce retaliatory measures in the near future... Washington bears sole responsibility for the deterioration of Russian-US ties," it said in a statement, quoting Alexander Darchiev, the ministry's North American affairs director.

Darchiev noted that Washington's actions have become regular, and the recent decision to impose a new package of sanctions against Russian leaders and the country's banking sector shows that the US has plainly run out of restrictive measures.

"No single aggressive attempt against Russia will go unpunished," he warned, adding that this would only serve to unite the Russian people and result in the enemy's "humiliating defeat."
