According to data from Russia's state statistics department, Russia has overtaken Brazil as the world's second-highest death toll from the COVID-19 outbreak, after the United States.

Some epidemiologists believe that measuring excess deaths is the most reliable way to assess a pandemic's real impact. According to Rosstat, 87,527 individuals died in Russia due to coronavirus-related causes in November, making it the bloodiest month since the outbreak began.

According to Reuters estimates based on Rosstat numbers up to the end of November and data from the coronavirus task force for December, Russia's total pandemic death toll reached 658,634, surpassing Brazil's 618,800 deaths.

According to Reuters, the death toll in the United States is greater, at 825,663 people, but the country's population is more than twice as large as Russia's. Russia has reported more than 835,000 more deaths since the epidemic began in April 2020 and ended in November, compared to the usual mortality rate from 2015 to 2019.

Some epidemiologists believe that counting excess deaths is the most accurate approach to measure a pandemic's real impact. So far, the Omicron version has had little effect on Russia's mortality toll, which was mostly caused by a spike in illnesses in October and November, which health officials blamed on the Delta variety and a tardy vaccination effort. On Thursday, Russian authorities ordered hospitals to get prepared for a possible surge in COVID-19 cases.
