New York: Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The two leaders talked about recent developments and matters on the Security Council's agenda.
Their discussion focused on the ongoing war in Ukraine and its impact both regionally and globally. They also addressed the cooperation between Russia and the UN, as well as the implementation of the Pact for the Future.
The Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry shared a photo of the meeting, highlighting Lavrov's discussions with Guterres. According to the UN's summary released on Thursday, they reviewed the latest issues facing the Security Council and exchanged views on the implications of the war in Ukraine.
Additionally, Lavrov met with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss key topics related to their bilateral cooperation and urgent international matters. They covered preparations for the upcoming BRICS Summit and the situation in Ukraine, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Jaishankar noted on social media that he and Lavrov talked about bilateral relations and regional issues. "Met FM Sergey Lavrov this afternoon at #UNGA79. Discussed our bilateral cooperation and regional issues," he posted.
This meeting was the second between the two ministers in a month. They had previously met during the India-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Saudi Arabia on September 9.
While in the U.S., Lavrov also interacted with various delegates and diplomats, including representatives from Jordan, Sudan, Uzbekistan, and Mali. On September 25, Lavrov met with the UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini to discuss the escalating tensions in the Arab-Israeli conflict and prioritize humanitarian responses in the Gaza Strip.
Lavrov later shared his meeting with Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, indicating ongoing discussions on multiple fronts.
On September 23, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a "Pact for the Future" aimed at tackling 21st-century challenges such as climate change, conflict, and human rights. The pact was accepted by consensus, although a small group of seven countries, led by Russia, did not support a last-minute amendment.
The UN's official account stated that the adoption of the Pact for the Future will foster greater international cooperation for a better future. The Pact addresses various themes, including peace, sustainable development, climate change, digital cooperation, human rights, and the transformation of global governance.
