Russia’s Hyundai's factory remains closed amid Ukraine crisis

Hyundai Motor, South Korea's largest carmaker, has cancelled plans to reopen a facility in Russia due to ongoing supply difficulties caused by the Ukraine situation.

According to officials, Hyundai Motor had planned to resume the temporarily closed factory in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, but decided against it due to ongoing supply difficulties of automotive semiconductors. Since March 1, the factory has been shut down.

According to the Yonhap news agency, automotive manufacturing in Russia are experiencing chip supply difficulties because air and sea routes to Russia have been stopped as a result of sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine. The Russian plant produces about 230,000 fully assembled Hyundai automobiles per year.

Following the invasion of Ukraine, Amazon's cloud computing unit, AWS, has declared that it will no longer accept new clients from Russia or Belarus. The company stated it will continue to work with a number of NGOs and organisations to help meet the region's humanitarian needs.
