SD Burman was born on October 1, 1906 in Comilla (now Bangladesh).  His mother's name was Nirmala Devi and his father's name was Nabadwipchandra Dev Burman. S D Burman shared a very good relationship with Legendary Singer Lata Mangeshkar.  They have worked together for the creation of the best songs of that time. Sachin Dev Burman once said that  "Give me a harmonium, give me Lata, and I'll make music," SD Burman was often quoted saying. Their songs worked wonders on screen, and her first mega hit song with SD Burman, 'Thandi hawayein' for 'Naujawan,' was released in 1951.  Both of them were legendary in their field but once they got into the fight and stopped working with each other.

Sachin Dev Burman fight with Swara Kokila Lata Mangeshkar is one of the most famous stories of Bollywood. Lata had mentioned in an old interview in the radio. The song that caused controversy was from the 1958 film 'Sitaron Se Aag'. Lata said, 'Dada was very happy when I recorded the song 'Pag Thumak Chalat...' and made it OK. Once the composer  give thumbs up a song, the recording is not done again. But Burman was a perfectionist. He called me that he wanted to re-record the song. As I was going out, I refused to do the recording. Burman got angry on this. After this, both did not work together for many years.

This rift between Lata and Sachin Da went away only after a few years. Sachin da's son Pancham i.e. Rahul Dev Burman was the one to reconcile the two. In fact, in 1962, when Rahul Dev Burman was giving music for his film 'Chhote Nawab', he told his father that in his first film as a music director, I wanted Lata didi to sing. Then what was once again Sachin da and Lata came together and gave many songs.

Among his many honours, Burman received the Sangeet Natak Akademi (National Academy of Music, Dance, and Drama) award in 1958 and the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, in 1969 for his contribution to music. His name also has been attached to a number of music awards from a variety of organizations.
