S Jaishankar reaches Bahrain for two-day visit, expresses grief over demise of PM Khalifa

Manama: India's Foreign Minister S.K. Jaishankar has expressed grief on behalf of the people of India over the government of Bahrain Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa. He is on a two-day visit to the Gulf countries. Prince Khalifa died on November 11 in the US at the age of 84, where he was undergoing treatment for age-related ailments.

He was cremated on 13 November. He is one of the few leaders in the world who has served the PM for the longest time. S. Jaishankar tweeted Tuesday night, "Bahrain's visit began with a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani. Condoling the demise of former Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa." On 13 November, the Indian Embassy in Bahrain organized a condolence meeting on the arrival of Prince Khalifa.

Shah Hamed bin Khalifa, the uncle of Shah Hammad bin Isa Al Khalifa, took over as the PM in 1970 and held this position till his death. He became Prime Minister in 1971, a year before Bahrain became independent.
