Many countries has started the vaccination drive against coronavirus. South Africa has received first batch of corona vaccine doses. The nation has secured millions of corona vaccine doses from different suppliers and expects more to come.
President Cyril Ramaphosa made a big announcement about corona vaccine in his televised address on Monday night. He said, "In addition to the one million Covishield doses we received today, we expect another 500,000 doses from the Serum Institute of India to arrive later in February," he said. "We have secured 12 million doses in total from the global COVAX facility, which has indicated that it will release approximately two million doses by March." The president further said that a further nine million doses would come from Johnson and Johnson, which has contracted Aspen, one of the major pharmaceutical companies in South Africa, to manufacture these vaccines in the country.
India is supplying vaccienes to many countries From 20 January, India has gifted over 55 lakh doses of vaccines in the neighbourhood including Bhutan (1.5 lakh), Maldives (1 lakh), Nepal (10 lakh), Bangladesh (20 lakh), Myanmar (15 lakh), Mauritius (1 lakh), Seychelles (50,000), Sri Lanka (5 lakhs) and Bahrain (1 lakh).
