Kottayam: In the midst of tightened security, the gates for the Sabarimala Temple will open for public on Monday evening for a two-day ritual. For unversed just weeks after the hilly holy place witnessed violent protests by devotees protesting against the Supreme Court judgment to allow women of menstruating age to enter the temple premises. In wake of last month’s violent incidents, the Kerala government on Sunday deployed more than 2,000 police personnel at the place of pilgrimage.

A 20-member commando team and 100 women personnel have been deployed to ensure a “smooth” darshan for devotees and to maintain law and order in the region. Police stated on Sunday that prohibitory orders banning gathering of four or more people have been issued for Sabarimala, as well the base towns of Pamba, Nilakkal, Erumeli and Elavunkal, as Indian Express reported.

Last month, Sabarimala Temple gates were opened for the first time between October 17 and 22 post the SC judgment allowing women of all ages to enter the temple premises. However, angry devotees had staged protests and had prevented the entrance of women aged 10 and 50 into the temple, in violation of the apex court order.

On Monday, the temple gates will reopen for the second time after the SC judgment on the occasion of  “Chithira Aattavisesham” on Tuesday, which is the birth anniversary of the last King of Travancore, Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma. Gate would close on Tuesday at 10 pm only to reopen again on November 17 for the yearly three-month pilgrim.
