Chanu has won medals in the World Championships and Commonwealth Games and has also received the Padma Shri Award from the Government of India for his contribution to the field of sports. Chanu won a silver medal in the 48 kg category of weightlifting at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow and lifted a total of 170 kg, including 75 in snatch and 95 in clean and jerk.
