Pune: In an excellent initiative, Pune Zilla Parishad has decided to set up a Sakhi cell or a period-friendly room in all Panchayat Samiti offices in the city. This decision was made keeping in mind the problems caused by menstruating women coming to the office. Pooja Parge, the chairperson of the Women and Child Welfare Department of Pune Zilla Parishad, said that “Due to this period, it is very difficult for women to work continuously for eight to ten hours."

Most women experience slight pain due to menstruation. These rooms will allow women to take a break from work and rest for some time. In addition to the Zilla Parishad headquarters, Sakhi cells are being set up in all the 13 panchayat committees of the city. These are to be commissioned on Monday to mark International Women's Day. The room will have a sanitary napkin vending machine, bed, sofa, table, chair, fans, drinking water, glass, and water heater.

The same local self-help groups and women shopkeepers are engaged in providing first aid kits, medicines, computers, sanitary napkins, etc. to the offices. Supervisor of Integrated Child Development Services Wing Drs. Ratnaprabha Potdar said that Sakhi Cell and Grievance Box will definitely be operational in Baramati, Bhor, Daund, Haveli, Indapur, Junnar, Khed, Shirur, and Velha taluka by Monday.
