Chandigarh: The marriage of Sakshi Mishra, daughter of BHARATIYA(BJP) MLA Rajesh Mishra, is creating headlines. Sakshi has married a Dalit and is now alleging that she is being threatened. On the other side of the picture, the BJP government is giving two-and-a-half lakh rupees to such couples to promote inter-caste marriages.
Briefing the Lok Sabha in 2018, the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment had briefed the Minister of State on how the government is encouraging inter-caste marriages by eliminating discrimination. If one of the spouses belongs to the Scheduled Caste, the Government gives two-and-a-half lakh rupees. It is worth mentioning here that the central government had launched a scheme to provide financial assistance on inter-cast marriages in 2013.
Earlier, those earning up to five lakh rupees a year were benefited. In December 2017, the Modi government had abolished the five lakh rupees ceiling and added all income groups. This is Dr. Ambedkar Scheme for Social Integration through Intercast Marriage Scheme. Under this, the government provides two-and-a-half lakh rupees to such couples.
