Congress leader, Salam Joy Singh, who is contesting for the Wangoi Assembly constituency in Manipur, has been expelled from the party for allegedly supporting rival BJP candidate Oinam Lukhoi Singh.

T Mangibabu Singh, the working president of the Manipur State Congress, wrote to Salam Joy Singh in response to several viral videos, and said: "There is prima facie evidence against you for breaching the Indian National Congress's constitution's "disciplinary norms." As a result, you are immediately expelled from the Congress Party's primary membership."

In a triangular race in the Wangoi Assembly constituency, the National People's Party, an estranged partner of the ruling saffron party, is competing with Congress and the BJP. Oinam Lukhoi Singh, a Congress nominee, was elected from the Wangoi seat in Imphal West District in the previous Assembly elections in 2017 and 2012, however, he later joined the BJP and is contesting this election on the saffron party's ticket. Various Congress officials and MLAs, including former State President Govindas Konthoujam, have defected to the BJP on several occasions since 2017.
