With the help of five goals from captain Sam Ker, Australia defeated the lower-ranked Indonesian 18-0 in their opening match of the women's Asian Cup AFC here on Friday.

Chelsea striker Ker was also recently declared runner-up of FIFA's Best Player Award. He has scored the first hat-trick of this phase of the tournament.  Before the match, she was one goal behind Tim Cahill in Australia's all-time (among women's and men's) top goal scorers list, but has surpassed him by 4 goals after the match. He has scored 54 goals in his 105th match.

Earlier, the Indian women's football team lost several chances in their first match against Iran at the AFC Women's Asian Cup here. In the other match, 8-time champions China have started their campaign with a 4-0 win over Chinese Taipei in the opening match.

The Indian team dominated the first half late but could not capitalise on the opportunity. Iran created 2 good movements. At one point, the ball has hit the goalpost. For India, Dengmi Grace tried through a header in the 76th minute but was saved by the goalkeeper.  India will take on Chinese Taipei on Sunday. Wang Shuang scored 2 goals (third minute and 68th minute) for China. The other 2 goals have been scored by Wang Shanshan (ninth minute) and Zhang Jin (54th minute). For the first time since July 2020, The Chinese team, playing internationally, scored 2 goals in the opening 10 minutes, dampening Hopes of a reversal of Chinese Taipei, playing for the first time in the tournament since 2008.
