MUMBAI: Prominent bhajan singer Anup Jalota is among 128 eminent personalities from the field of performing arts who have conferred the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards for 2019, 2020, 2021, which were announced late on Friday.

Ten years after receiving the Padma Shri, Jalota, 69, known as the "Bhajan Samrat," who is from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, has been selected for the 2020 Akademi Puraskar in the music category.

"Seeing my name listed for the highly coveted Akademi Puraskar makes me thrilled and humble. Every artist's dream comes true when they receive this honour, and I am grateful to everyone for this amazing honour", ," Jalota said in his first reaction.

Ten remarkable personalities were unanimously chosen as Akademi Fellows by the General Council of SNA, the National Academy of Music, Dance, and Drama, at a meeting held in New Delhi at the beginning of this month. Each recipient will get Rs 3,00,000.

The SNA also chose 128 performers from the domains of music, dance, theatre, traditional folk/tribal music, dance, and puppetry, as well as contributions to performing arts generally, who would each get Rs 1,00,000 over the course of three years.

The recipients span the entire spectrum of performing arts, including folk and tribal arts, puppetry, instrument building, vocal and instrumental music (both Hindustani and Carnatic), flute, sitar, mridangam, Sugam Sangeet, and Harikatha; all major Indian and Contemporary dance forms.

At a formal event to be held soon. The awardees, coming from across the country, will be presented the awards at the hands of President Draupadi Murmu at a special ceremony soon.
