Sanjay Upreti, a doctor at the STNM hospital in Sikkim, dies after being stabbed

On December 14, Dr. Sanjay Upreti was stabbed by a jilted lover and died after he sustained serious injuries. Dr. Sanjay Upreti, 45, passed away at Neotia Hospital in Siliguri about 3 a.m. on Friday. Dr. Upreti was stabbed while trying to save a sanitary attendant at the STNM hospital in Gangtok who had been attacked by Thinlay Bhutia.

Dr. Sanjay Upreti was stabbed near his crotch in the incident, which resulted in his left leg being amputated. On December 15, Sikkim chief minister PS Tamang ordered Dr Upreti and the sanitary attendant Kalawati Chettri to be evacuated to Siliguri for better care. Meanwhile, Kalawati Chettri's medical condition is said to be grave, and he is fighting for his life.

Dr. Upreti was a top doctor at the STNM Hospital in Gangtok's cardiac department. "Angry with his girlfriend for refusing to talk to him when she was in a hospital in Gangtok, Sikkim, attending to a sick relative, the man embarks on a stabbing rampage, attacking the doctor and sanitation attendant," police said.

Dr. Upreti died in the early hours of Friday morning due to multi-organ failure."I express my heartfelt condolences on the tragic passing of renowned cardiologist Dr Sanjay Upreti," Sikkim BJP president DB Chauhan remarked. Dr. Upreti's death has left the medical community with an irreparable loss."
