MOSCOW, APRIL 21: Russia declared on Wednesday that it had successfully test-fired a Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, at a time when tensions between Moscow and the West have risen dramatically over Ukraine.

The missile was launched from a silo at the Plesetsk state test cosmodrome in northwest Russia's Arkhangelsk area at 15:12 Moscow Time, according to the country's Defense Ministry.

The training warheads arrived at a designated region at the Kura test field on the Kamchatka Peninsula and fulfilled all tasks, it said in a statement.

Following the test, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the new missile complex possesses "the highest tactical and technological features and is capable of defeating all modern anti-missile defence systems."

Sarmat said in an online conference with top defence officials that he will improve the Russian Armed Forces' fighting capability, safeguard Russia from external threats, and "make those who, in the heat of feverish and hostile speech, try to attack our country ponder."
