Saudi Arabia is poised to become the host nation for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, as Australia formally announced its withdrawal from the bidding process on Tuesday, October 31. Football Australia cited an extensive evaluation of the complexities associated with hosting the prestigious tournament as the basis for their decision. Instead, they are considering bids to host the 2026 Women's Asian Cup and the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup, reaffirming their commitment to international football events.

In an official statement, Football Australia asserted their readiness to host the world's oldest women's international competition, the 2026 Women's Asian Cup, followed by the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.

The competitive landscape shifted when the Asian Football Confederation threw its weight behind Saudi Arabia's bid to host the tournament. Initially, several nations had expressed their interest in hosting the coveted event through the Asian Football Confederation. Indonesia's football association had initially signaled interest in a joint bid with Australia, but to Australia's disappointment, Indonesia ultimately extended its support to Saudi Arabia. Malaysia and Singapore were among the other countries that had also expressed interest in hosting the tournament.

FIFA had set the deadline for October 31 to receive bids from national associations in Asia and Oceania interested in hosting the tournament. James Johnson, the head of Football Australia, had initially expressed enthusiasm for bidding to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup. However, the governing body subsequently opted to divert its focus towards securing bids for other international competitions.

The President of the Asian Football Confederation, the continental governing body to which Australia belongs, extended a warm welcome to Saudi Arabia's bid. He emphasized the unity of the entire Asian football family in supporting Saudi Arabia and offered any necessary assistance to facilitate their hosting of the tournament. It is worth noting that Australia's previous bid to host the 2022 men's World Cup received only a single vote of support, underlining the significance of this recent development.
