Chrissy Teigen said on Thursday that the miscarriage she claimed to have experienced two years prior was actually an abortion, which shocked her. Teigen and her husband John Legend had previously disclosed that they lost their son Jack at 20 weeks due to a pregnancy issue in September 2020. They said it was a miscarriage at the time. Speaking at Propper Daley's "A Day of Unreasonable Conversation" symposium on social impact, which took place on Thursday, Teigen claimed she was shocked to learn that it was indeed an abortion.

“Two years ago, when I was pregnant with Jack, John and my third child, I had to make a lot of difficult and heartbreaking decisions. It became very clear around halfway through that he would not survive, and that I wouldn’t either without any medical intervention,” she said.

Teigen, who is now pregnant and has two children with Legend, Luna, 6, and Miles, 4, added that she got excellent medical care as well as supportive friends and family. She was particularly appreciative of the kindness received from complete strangers after the pair made their news public. She went on, discussing her miscarriage, before stopping herself. “Let’s just call it what it was: It was an abortion,” the star said. “An abortion to save my life for a baby that had absolutely no chance. And to be honest, I never, ever put that together until, actually, a few months ago.”

Teigen claimed that after Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court earlier this summer, she realised what had happened. When Legend made her realise that she was one of those people, she told him that she felt pity for those who had abortions, the difficulties they had to face, and the difficult choice "they" had to make.

“I fell silent, feeling weird that I hadn’t made sense of it that way,” Teigen shared. “I told the world we had a miscarriage, the world agreed we had a miscarriage, all the headlines said it was a miscarriage. And I became really frustrated that I didn’t, in the first place, say what it was, and I felt silly that it had taken me over a year to actually understand that we had had an abortion.”

The discussion that Teigen was giving was titled "We Made That Choice." The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills hosted the invitation-only event, which was organised in partnership with the culture change organisation Invisible Hand and included The Hollywood Reporter as a media partner. The event's full day of programming brought together television writers, producers, and executives with cultural changemakers.

The day's numerous discussions covered topics like intellectual humility, mental health, social and economic inequality, criminal justice, reproductive rights, climate change, responsible tech, and more. These discussions are meant to influence future onscreen plotlines and support the preservation of authenticity in stories seen on screen.
