New Delhi: Savita Punia, the new captain of the Indian women's hockey team, was appointed on Friday for the Women's Asian Champions Trophy, which will be contested in Donghae, South Korea, from December 5 to 12. Rani Rampal, the regular India captain who guided India to a remarkable fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics, has been rested to recover from an old injury.

India kicks out their campaign on the first day, competing in a single-pool tournament against China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Malaysia for the title. Savita, the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year, will be assisted by Deep Grace Ekka, an accomplished defender who will serve as her deputy.

Rajani Etimarpu, goalkeeper, and defenders Udita, Nikki Pradhan, and Gurjit Kaur were all members of the Tokyo Olympic team. Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Nisha, Monika, Neha, and Jyoti, who represented India at the Tokyo Olympics, are among the midfielders.

Namita Toppo, who was an alternate player at the Tokyo Olympics, and Lilima Minz, an Odisha statemate, are also on the team. Vandana Katariya, a two-time Olympian, will lead the attack in the forward line, with Navneet Kaur, a member of the Tokyo Olympics squad. The team also includes forwards Rajwinder Kaur, Mariana Kujur, and Sonika.
