Unlike some politicians, bacteria are trending up in their popularity. bacteria exist as two types: either harmful (infectious) or protective to my health (probiotics).

In an era of ever-increasing cleansers, moisturizers, deodorants, and so much more, the incidence of skin issues and sensitivities is on the rise. Recent years have seen an increase in sensitive skin, with over half the population self-identifying as having sensitive skin.

Most of the microbes live in our digestive tract, but a large population lives on the skin. Bacteria on skin often evokes mixed reactions from people. While the wrong bacteria in the wrong place can cause problems, but the right bacteria in the right place can have benefits.

  • Skin bacteria boosts immunity. The evidence suggests that some may protect us from pathogens (microbes that cause disease) by stimulating the activity of our immune system and possibly by making antimicrobial chemicals. The immune system's job is to fight disease.
  • Resident and Transient bacteria are present on the skin. Resident bacteria live on the surface of the skin and in its upper layer. They are our long-term companions and aren't removed by washing with soap and water. Transient bacteria are those that we pick up when we touch contaminated surfaces. Transient bacteria are more likely to be harmful than resident ones.
