SC, ST Act Row: Centre to file review petition in SC today
Share:

Centre will file a review petition today before the Supreme Court, challenging the top court order banning automatic arrest and registration of cases for alleged harassment of SCs and STs.

The top court had recently proscribed automatic arrests and registration of criminal cases under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes Act, 1989. The law protects the marginalized communities against intolerance, discrimination and atrocities.

The petition will be filed by the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry. The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989 was amended recently to take account of new offences and to ensure prompt justice to victims. The amended law had come into effect from January 26, 2016. In view of the centre's verdict, Union Social Justice Minister Thawarchand Gehlot has appealed to take out the agitation call.

Meanwhile, Union Social Justice Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot had on Friday appealed to organizations and individuals opposing the Supreme Court's judgment on the SC/ST Act to take out their protests in the wake of the government's verdict to file a review petition challenging the order.

In view of centre's decision to file a review petition in the Supreme Court, Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan appealed protestors to pull out proposed agitation.

Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in a tweet assured that review petition by the government over the SC judgement on SC/ST Protection Act shall be filed optimistically today.
