SC Collegium to decide on Justice K M Joesph's elevation today

New Delhi [India], May 02 (NT): Following the massive uproar on an appointment bid in Apex court, The Supreme Court (SC) collegium meeting is likely to take place today which may for a second time recommend the name of the Uttarakhand High Court Chief Justice K M Joseph for elevation as a judge of the top court.

Last week, the Centre sent back Justice Joseph's name for re-evaluation while giving consent on approving senior SC lawyer Indu Malhotra's name for SC judge post. She has become the 25th judge of SC.

In the SC collegium meeting, the five most senior judges of the top court, Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph, are expected to recap their earlier recommendation. According to Sources, the Collegium meeting will be conducted at 4.15 pm at the Supreme Court premises

Justice Joseph's name was recommended along with senior advocate of the apex court who now SC Judge, Justice Indu Malhotra, in January.

Indu Malhotra was taken oath as the judge of the Supreme Court on April 27, becoming the first woman lawyer to be directly appointed from the Bar Counseling. (NT)
