Supreme Court may hear release of Omar and Mehbooba today

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court is likely to hear today the release of NC leader and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti. In fact, Congress supporter Tahsin Poonawala had filed a petition in the Supreme Court.

In the petition, he had demanded that the ban like closure of phone lines, internet and news channels be lifted in Kashmir and also order the release of former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti.

He said that through this petition, he is not giving his opinion on Section 370. The petition will be heard by a bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra, Justice MR Shah and Justice Ajay Rastogi. In addition to the petition, Kashmir Times Executive Editor Anuradha Bhasin has also moved the Supreme Court. In the petition, he has sought lifting of ban on journalists working in Jammu and Kashmir. The petition is likely to be heard soon.

Apart from these petitions, the National Conference has also reached the Supreme Court against the Central government's decision to revoke Section 370. Besides, a petition has also been filed by advocate Manohar Lal Sharma in the same case. In Jammu and Kashmir, Eid was celebrated with great fanfare on Monday. After Section 370 was abolished, peace and tranquillity prevailed in Jammu and Kashmir during Eid, a Union Territory. After the prayers, the government has again beefed up security in the valley. In fact, many people are opposing the steps taken by the government.
