NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has issued notices to five states and the CBI, including the Centre, on a plea for illegal sand mining across the country. The court directed the Centre not to give any environmental clearance for sand mining projects irrespective of the cumulative impact of sand mining across the region.

A bench headed by Justice S A Bobde issued notices to the Centre, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh. The bench issued the notice during the hearing of the petition claiming that uncontrolled illegal mining in the states is damaging the environment.

Lawyers Prashant Bhushan and Pranab Sachdeva, appearing for the petitioner, told the court during the debate that sand mining was taking place in the states without the requisite environmental clearance. The petitioner urged the court to order the CBI to register and investigate the sand mining scams mentioned in the petition.
