New Delhi:  On Tuesday, the Supreme Court refused to entertain a plea filed by Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP) chief Mayawati against the Election Commission gag order on her for hate speech during the 2019 Lok Sabha poll campaign. BSP supremo Mayawati's plea challenging the EC's 48-hr campaign ban on her and expressed satisfaction over the poll body's action against leaders making hate speeches.

Mayawati had moved the Supreme Court after the Election Commission imposed a 48-hour campaigning ban after she was found violating the model code of conduct. Taking note of the EC action, the court said it seems the poll body has "woken up" and barred various politicians from poll campaigning for varying hours.

At a recent meeting in Deoband, Mayawati had warned the Muslim community not to "split votes" between the Congress and her alliance. Appealing to caste or communal feelings to secure votes is banned under the model code, which is a series of dos and don'ts for political parties ahead of elections. The election body has faced opposition allegations that it is soft on leaders of the ruling party violating the election code.

The bench also comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna made it clear that no further order was required for now. The Election Commission on Monday imposed a nationwide campaign ban on Adityanath for 72 hours and on Union Minister Maneka Gandhi and Mayawati for 48 hours from Tuesday for their "provocative" communal remarks, which it said had the "propensity to polarise the elections".
