Hollywood actress, Scarlett Johansson has been condemned a lot of times for portraying the character of a transgender, in the show 'Rub & Tug'.
The actress essayed the role of Jean Marie Gill, who in the 1980s, managed to get into a prostitution business via the massage parlor that she owned. She kept her identity hidden and took up the identity of a man named Dante 'Tex' Gill.
The actress tried to justify her decision of quitting the show. She expressed, "In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project."
She also added, "Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I've learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive. I have great admiration and love for the trans community and am grateful that the conversation regarding inclusivity in Hollywood continues."
"While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante's story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film."
Johansson also said that other actors who portrayed a transgender character on-screen were critically acclaimed for it and also won several awards for the same.
