Lucknow: All government schools in Uttar Pradesh will now have morning prayer meetings and courses and other activities in the open instead of being conducted within the classroom and auditorium. The reason behind this idea is to increase the amount of calcium and vitamin D in the students' body.

The decision came after a recent directive issued by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to several states and union territories stating that vitamin D deficiency diseases, such as sunlight, can be used to deal with rickets. More physical activities should be organised. Additional Director (Basic Education) Lalitha Pradeep said, "Schools will now have to organise morning prayer meetings and other activities under the open sky. In many schools in villages, morning meetings are held outside, but schools which are located in urban and semi-urban areas will also have to follow this directive. ''

He further said that the focus will also be on organising sports events outside. Lalitha Pradeep said that mHRD has issued instructions to all 29 states and seven union territories to 'promote programmes in sunlight' in their respective schools.
