Gangtok: The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) has written to Governor Ganga Prasad, requesting that President's rule be imposed in the state due to "deteriorating peace and order" under Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) control.

On Wednesday, an SDF delegation led by former Lok Sabha MP P D Rai met with the governor at the Raj Bhavan and handed over the memorandum.

"Among other things, we have urged the governor to secure the safety and security of Sikkimese people's socioeconomic, political, and fundamental rights, as provided for in Article 371 (F) of the Constitution," an SDF leader stated.

The team also asked Prasad for assurances on a free and fair assembly election in 2024.

The SDF leaders claimed that workers from the ruling SKM attacked their supporters earlier this week in a village in South Sikkim, injuring 15 of them on their way to a programme.

Meanwhile, the SKM, in a statement, denied the claims and stated that it was "SDF's culture to terrorise people and political enemies while they were in control in the state for 25 years".
